Book Shelf: Dance of the Sacred Circle – A Native American Tale

Dance of the Sacred Circle – A Native American Tale by Kristina Rodanas

**Throwback to 2016** – From the time Thomas and Lillian were born I read to them nightly before going to bed; leading to some time in 2017 when we all decided to discontinue doing so. Their tastes in what interested each of them had solidified by this point. We all continue to be heavy readers, reading daily.

A tale of bravery and magic based on a Blackfeet legend …. “The old ones spoke of the Great Chief in the Sky, whose breath gave life all the world. They said he lived in a wonderful land far above the stars …. ” Another one we really enjoyed … –Camilla

Book Shelf: Tomorrow to be Brave – A Memoir of the Only Woman Ever to Serve in the French Foreign Legion by Susan Travers with Wendy Holden

Tomorrow to be Brave – A Memoir of the Only Woman Ever to Serve in the French Foreign Legion by Susan Travers with Wendy Holden

My interest in this book was due to having interviewed Wendy Holden on MeetingtheAuthors.com. I really enjoyed meeting Wendy and getting to know her, so went in search of any books my local library had authored by Wendy. They have several that I’m making my way through. I’ve also requested the library purchase her newest book!

A gripping true story that left me in awe of this courageous woman. An up close and intimate tale of what was endured by those who fought World War II, told through Susan Travers’ eyes about what she experienced.

Book Shelf: The Year of the Blue Water by Yanyi

The Year of the Blue Water by Yanyi

This is a Yale Series of Younger Poets book that I came across while pulling holds at the library. The title and cover caught my attention.

One of my favorite pieces from the collection:

“Form gives space for something to exist. You have to dig in yourself to find what you’ll put in it. Places you don’t know appear. Poems are a way to ask for what exists, to invite what wants to be visible.”

Book Shelf: Grounded Spirituality by Jeff Brown

Grounded Spirituality by Jeff Brown

I began reading this about 5 months prior to finishing it. At about 370 pages, it’s definitely not a quick read. I didn’t get finished with it the first time I checked it out from the library. Then it was lost within the library system for about a month. And, then it reappeared! HA! So … finally got to finish it!!

It was exactly what I needed to read at the exact moment I needed it! Unlike any I’ve ever read. Eye and heart opening. I did find myself getting irritated with some of the content; yet, it hit home for me. I would not have been ready for this content years ago. Specifically, the topic of spiritual bypassing, avoiding what calls to be healed within us.

Walking into my own shadows, darkness, and triggers is something I shifted to doing in 2016. This book reinforced the path I had been on since then. Incredibly happy that I requested the library purchase this one and that they did purchase it!

Book Shelf: Aunt Dimity’s Good Deed by Nancy Atherton

Aunt Dimity’s Good Deed by Nancy Atherton

It’s clear I’m in for the long haul with this series. I have much catching up to do as this was published in 1996 and Nancy Atherton is still writing this series! I’ll be reading them for a while! HA!

Since this is still near the beginning of the series, more characters were introduced and it was great getting to know them. I loved the mystery to be solved, yet, this has been my least favorite so far. I still very much enjoyed it and enjoyed learning about the history of Lori’s husbands family.

Book Shelf: Painted Oxen by Thomas Lloyd Qualls

Painted Oxen by Thomas Lloyd Qualls

This book is unlike any other I’ve read. First of all, I love the cover and the title. That was enough to draw me to the book. A visionary fictional story following two men on separate pilgrimages.

One of my favorite passages from the book, “…. Thera are many guides on this path. There are the leaves and the birds, the wind and the stones, the sun and the moon, the stars and the soil. Each has its own language to teach …. “

This is one of those books to own so it can be read more than once, at different times, as I’m sure it’s meaning will shift as my path shifts.

I interviewed Thomas Lloyd Qualls on this website in August 2019. Follow the link below to learn more about Thomas.

A Picture Book of Harriet Beecher Stowe by David A. Adler

A great book about the woman who wrote the instant best-seller, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Stowe was passionate about justice, and determined to make a difference. She wrote, “I do not mean to live in vain.”

Book Shelf: The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick

The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick

Phaedra Patrick’s latest book. I read her first two and love each book more than the one before! I read the entire book in just a few sittings. I could not stand to stop. Just had to keep reading! I love a GREAT mystery; yet also want it to be a mystery that doesn’t involve murders or deaths. Phaedra does not disappoint with delivering a whopping mystery, with lovable characters to get to know (and some you’d rather not know). I’m already excited for her next book!!

I interviewed Phaedra Patrick on this website in June 2019. You’ll want to check that out too! –Camilla

Book Shelf: Aunt Dimity and the Duke by Nancy Atherton

Aunt Dimity and the Duke Nancy Atherton

I am in love with this series. Haven’t read one yet that I did not devour. I was unsure I’d enjoy this one, but once I got started, there was no turning back. It was great going on this journey with Emma, learning more about her, the new characters introduced, and getting reacquainted with characters from the other books. – Camilla

Book Shelf: See You in the Cosmos by Jack Cheng

See You in the Cosmos by Jack Cheng

I pushed against reading this book as it’s not my usual and favored genre or style. I specifically chose this book, along with several others, to read with Thomas. He hasn’t read this one yet. However, I’ve let him know I loved it so hopefully he’ll give it a shot. This is another I found in my search for juvenile and young adult books that deal with mental health.

The journey of a young boy searching for answers, always seeing the best in all he meets. A young boy who innocently inspires and changes all he touches. An 11 year old way beyond his years who has an extraordinary adventure. I so much enjoyed going on this adventure with Alex. Loved it! – Camilla
