Book Shelf: The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson

The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson

Gripping adventure traveling between worlds, covering and uncovering secrets, with strong characters. I loved, loved, loved this story. I kept imagining it as a movie, with the scenes of the book playing out as movie scenes. It’s a fantastically written story that pulled me in and captivated my attention.

Book Shelf: me and white supremacy – Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor by Laylae Saad

me and white supremacy – Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor by Laylae Saad

This is a powerful and informative book. I not only read it, I completed the workbook section also. In the past I would have read the title of this book, and looked away thinking that this book is not meant for me. On May 25, 2020 that changed. My heart cracked open, allowing me to know and understand that I MUST educate myself on this topic.

In years past, I had been apathetic, stayed silent, ignorant of the enormity of this situation, and thinking that none of this applied to me because I am a good person. The days following May 25th, I chose to educate myself and my eyes and mind have been opened to the horrors that my brothers and sisters have been living. I think many of us feel this book is not meant for us. Let your heart guide the way. It doesn’t have to be this book. Choose any of the books, talks, or movies out there and educate yourself on the definition of white supremacy and white privilege. It’s not what you may think.

Quote from the book, “There is no clean, comfortable, or convenient way to dismantle a violent system of oppression. You must roll up your sleeves and get down into the ugly, fertile dirt.”

Book Shelf: A Memoir of the Craft – On Writing by Stephen King

A Memoir of the Craft – On Writing by Stephen King

This had been on my “to read” list for years! It did not disappoint.

This quote from the book hooked me from the beginning, “This is a short book because most books about writing are filled with bullshit.” And, “Omit needless words.” Ouch! I’m a wordy writer. It was good for me to see these two sentence in close proximity!

Happy to have finally read this one.

The Heartbeat of Trees: Embracing Our Ancient Bond with Forests and Nature by Peter Wohlleben

This was a slow read for me as it’s not exactly a page turner. However, I loved and enjoyed reading and learning more about trees. A must read for anyone concerned about our environment, even more so for those who think that nothing is wrong with how we treat our environment.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

I recently watched this movie, enjoying it so much that I sought out the book. The book was even better! I didn’t think I’d like the style of the book, written as letters back and forth between the characters. It grew on me though, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone. A heartwarming, moving story with strong female characters. Loved it so much!

Book Shelf: Born a Crime – Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

Born a Crime – Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

This is the first book I’ve read about life during apartheid and the days that followed freedom. A brave, courageous, eye-opening book about Noah’s childhood, his mom, his family and growing up as a mixed race person in South Africa. Not only that, being born a crime, as he is the son of a Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother. Which at the time was punishable by five years in prison. Also the story of unconditional and unconventional love, family, friendships, and Noah’s coming of age. Delivered with fearless honesty. I highly recommend this one.

Book Shelf: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick

This is the book from which the movie Blade Runner was based. I did not like the movie as it made absolutely no sense to me. A friend suggested I read the book. I’m happy that I took her advice. I enjoyed the writing style, getting to know the characters, and being immersed in this classic science fiction story. Loved it!

Book Shelf: Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury

Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury

I really enjoyed these essays, full of Bradbury’s humor. I’m surprised I’d not heard of this or read it before now. It was included on someone’s top “books about writing” list. Glad I came across it. Definitely worth the read!

The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan Le

This story gripped me from the beginning! A futuristic tale of the destruction that occurs from ignoring climate issues for too long. I enjoyed getting to know the two strong female characters who are sisters, being a part of the love they share for one another. I certainly was not able to “figure it out” until reading it as it happened. I love these types of books, this one included! GREAT story!!

Book Shelf: Beloved by Toni Morrison

Beloved by Toni Morrison

I’m late to the game with reading this one. Yet, glad I did. Actually, in the beginning I found it difficult to continue reading, nearly setting the book aside, thinking it wasn’t right for me. I kept going though, and so happy I did. A beautiful, heartbreaking story with genuine characters, villains stirring the blood to boiling point, rounded with the solid love of a mother. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
